Japanese designer turns the umbrella on its head

unbrella
In Japan, wet umbrellas are a problem taken a little more seriously than in the rest of the world. Many of the country's stores offer disposable bags for you to pack your dripping umbrella into, and now some of its creative types have taken on the task of improving the basic design as well. Hiroshi Kajimoto's H Concept studio has come up with the Unbrella, whose design inverts the standard opening mechanism of the umbrella. The metallic frame is now on the outside when the canopy is open, allowing it to enclose the wet part of your brolly when closed.
The Unbrella's design is helpful in gathering all the moisture into one spot, making it easier to commute on those packed Tokyo trains without becoming a nuisance to the people around you. It does pose challenges of its own, however, mostly to do with how much time a collapsed wet umbrella would take to dry out. Still, it's a rather ingenious take on an object that's undergone little change in centuries of history. Because of its upside-down orientation, the Unbrella can actually stand upright, plus its reverse opening makes it easier to extend in windy conditions. Pre-orders are being taken now at a price of roughly $95 with availability slated for mid-February.

From the forums: What's new in Android 4.4.1?

Android 4.4.1

Besides Nexus 5 camera enhancements, new version of KitKat brings lots of smaller changes

Android 4.4.1 is upon us, and the first maintenance release of KitKat is rolling out now to certain Nexus devices. The big news that everyone's talking about relates to the many camera fixes and enhancements bestowed upon the Nexus 5, but it turns out there are also a lot of smaller changes and improvements in the new OS.
These include fixes for glitches like the Nexus 5 speaker bug and the bug that occasionally made the notification bar partly opaque. What's more, haptic feedback has been tweaked on the Nexus 5, "Photos" is now the default photo-viewing app when you swipe out of the Camera app.
We're digging through all these changes and more in a thread on the Android Central forums, which is where you'll find our working list of what's new in Android 4.4.1. Check it out below — and join the discussion if you've spotted anything new since updating.

DSL settings: How to get Internet working on PTCL AN1020-25

Have you ever been dumbstruck? Let me remind you of a day when you might have been! You are at  home lazing around, suddenly the door bell rings. It is the PTCL guy who has finally decided to install your very own DSL that you ordered ummm… two maybe three months ago?
Well lets not go there! Lets just rejoice that he is here. :)

This is the modem you would typically get these days; the PTCL an 1020-25 which is WiFi enabled:

Its all happy going from there until you decide to get a little adventurous and somehow jumble up all the settings losing that important little link with the outside world. I know it can be really frustrating but lets try to get it working DIY style.
Power up your modem if it isn’t already and connect the phone line into the line port on the modem. If you just booted the modem you should have a red light for power. Wait for it to get stable.
If you are using a laptop connect to the modem over wifi. Your network should typically be named PTCL-BB unless you changed the SSID. If you are unable to connect over wifi or are using a desktop computer plug in a LAN wire into the modem and your PC. This should get you a connection with the modem. Do not hesitate if it shows an exclamation sign we just need a stable connection for now.
Once through, fire up your favorite browser and enter: 192.168.1.1

This should bring up a prompt asking you for the username and password. On a default device this is usually admin and admin respectively. If you have changed these credentials or the login page address please use the address and the credentials you specified in the modem settings. Worst come if you have forgotten what either of these were you would need to factory reset the modem.
Read here  to find out how to factory restore your modem.
Once you are through. Click on Advanced setup to be greeted by the WAN setup page. This is where we are going to add the correct settings for the itnernet to work once again.

If you have anything added to the table just click the checkboxes under the remove column and hit remove. Once done your modem will be wiped of any previous settings.
To begin click on add.
Use the image below to fill out the respective fields.

Alternatively you could also enter: VPI: 0 and VCI: 103 and check enable quality of service. Use these settings if the ones in the image do not work out for you. These are the two most common settings so either one of them should hopefully work!
Note: The following screens are the same for both the configurations.
Hit Next.  Choose PPP over ethernet (PPPoE), and set the encapsulation mode to LLC/SNAP-BRIDGING

Hit next. On this screen you will enter your PTCL username and password. The username now here usually is your PTCL landline number on which you have your DSL connection. This is without the area code. The password for this however is ptcl. If you still get a authentication error call 1218 and ask them for your credentials.
MTU is 1492. Use the following image to make the appropriate selection for the checkboxes.

Once again hit next and use the image as a reference to fill out this page. Typically you will check enable NAT, enable firewall and enable WAN service.

Hitting next shall give you a summary of your settings. This should be what you should expect:

Hit save, reboot your router and we are all set!
If everything worked correctly you should be able to get something like this and a stable green internet light on the modem and not to mention a working internet connection!

Your internet connection has been restored to its actual glory. Report back if these settings worked for you or if there were any hiccups.

If your problem remains unresolved check out the comments section below for solutions to a few possible scenarios that might be affecting you.

Daily iPhone 5s production now matches Moto X’s entire Q3 sales

A new report on iPhone production at Foxconn does an amazing job of putting demand for Apple’s latest iPhone in perspective. The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday issued some insights into Foxconn’s iPhone production that really help illustrate how much work is involved with building and shipping the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. According to The Journal’s unnamed sources, which are said to be executives at Foxconn’s parent company Hon Hai, Foxconn has 100 production lines, 600 people per line and a total of more than 300,000 workers dedicated solely to building the iPhone 5s — and that’s just at one factory in Zhengzhou, China. How many iPhone 5s handsets can all those people build? According to the report, they’re pumping out a staggering 500,000 iPhone 5s units each day.

To help put that remarkable figure in perspective, consider this: According to data from market research firm Strategy Analytics, Motorola only managed to sell 500,000 Moto X phones during the third quarter this year. The phone was first released on August 23rd, so it was available for more than a month in Q3.

In other words, Apple has more iPhone 5s handsets built each day than the Moto X sold in over one month.

One anonymous executive also noted that the iPhone 5c and iPhone 5 were easier to build than the iPhone 5s, which makes it even more impressive that Foxconn is managing to achieve the kind of output described in the report.

“For the iPhone 5C or the iPhone 5, we only have 500 workers per production line as the assembly procedure is less complicated,” the Hon Hai executive told WSJ. “Although the market had concerns over demand for the new iPhone before its launch, our Zhengzhou site’s production capacity for iPhones has continued to grow over the past two years.”

Another executive noted that Foxconn’s production of 500,000 iPhone 5s handsets each day is the highest daily output the company has ever achieved for a single smartphone model.

Galaxy Gear 2 Set To Be Thinner, Lighter And Come Bundled With The Galaxy S5 [Report]

The technology world never stops turning, and the smartphone portion is more fluid than most, which means it’s no surprise to anyone that Samsung is hard at work making the Galaxy Gear 2 so soon after the first version hit stores alongside the third generation Galaxy Note.

Not only is Samsung working on the device, but it seems that the company is more than happy to talk about it after an unnamed Samsung spokesperson told the Korean site ET News that not only is the Galaxy Gear 2 on the way, but that it will also be between 15% and 20% thinner than the original model. This new svelte design also means that the device will be lighter, which will come as good news to those that baulked at the idea of lugging the firstGalaxy Gear around on their poor unsuspecting wrist.

The same spokesperson said that the new smartwatch will tie in well with the also unannounced Galaxy S5, which will come as no bi surprise to anyone. What that does mean though is that we may just see the Galaxy Gear 2 bundled alongside Samsung’s next flagship smartphone in a similar way to how the Galaxy Gear was with the Galaxy Note 3. And yes, that’s the most times we’ve written the word ‘galaxy’ in a sentence, and yes, it’s lost all meaning at this point.

With Apple still yet to announce its own smartwatch, let along release one, it’s entirely possible that Samsung will be up to its second generation device before Apple is out on the blocks. Of course, that doesn’t mean that Apple won’t be competitive. Either Apple simply refuses to ship until the unannounced watch is at a standard with which it is comfortable, or it’s simply not on the cards at all. At this point, we’ve honestly no idea which of those two options it is.

Samsung seems happy to push forward with its own smartwatches regardless, and with the new device apparently set to be more functional – games, entertainment and healthcare are on the agenda – we could be in for an interesting 2014 as far as our wrists are concerned.

Bring it on, we say!

Would you buy the Galaxy Gear 2 when it comes out? Considering how much the current Gear lacks in terms of functionality.
